CALIFORNIA STATEHOOD: A HISTORY

California's stride to statehood was a protracted one, marked by various turns. Initially part of Mexico, California fell under the United States in 1848 following the Mexican-American War. However, its incorporation to the Union was not a straightforward process. Social groups within California had contrasting views on a number of issues, such as
